The Ionian is green: olive groves and cypresses down to the water, and islands a short sail apart. Mornings are usually still. After lunch a light north-west breeze, the maistro, fills in, and it dies by sunset.
There is no meltemi here, which makes the Ionian the gentlest of the four areas. The two main starting points are Corfu in the north and Lefkada in the middle; Lefkada puts you closest to Meganisi, Ithaca and Kefalonia.

Corfu or Lefkada?
Corfu for Paxos, Antipaxos and the coast of Epirus. Lefkada for Meganisi, Ithaca and Kefalonia, the more varied week. Both have an airport nearby.
Is the Ionian good for children?
It has the calmest water in Greece: still mornings, short hops between islands, and a light breeze in the afternoon.
When is the sea warmest?
In August, at about 26 °C. July and September are close behind, at about 24 °C.
